Alma 13–16

Overview

Alma explained that the Lord ordained high priests to teach the commandments and perform ordinances so the people could enter into the rest of the Lord. As he and Amulek taught the gospel of Jesus Christ in the city of Ammonihah, wicked people tormented the believers and put them to death by fire. Alma and Amulek were then imprisoned and severely persecuted. After being miraculously delivered from prison, they went to Sidom, where they found Zeezrom sick with a burning fever on account of his guilt. Alma healed and baptized Zeezrom.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Alma 13

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand what it means to enter into the rest of the Lord and how they can do so.

  • Student preparation: Consider inviting students to think about how they have been blessed through a Church leader or by participating in an ordinance of the gospel.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider dividing students into groups to study one of the two statements of doctrine and principle in the lesson and prepare to share what they discover with the class. Students could be placed into breakout rooms to study together, or they could study individually.

Alma 14

Lesson purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to help students trust in the Lord when facing hardship, suffering, and unfairness.

Alma 15

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students access the healing power available through Jesus Christ.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read the idea for family scripture study under Alma 15:1–12 in the study outline “June 24–30. Alma 13–16: ‘Enter into the Rest of the Lord’” in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families: Book of Mormon 2024.

  • Video:Zeezrom Is Healed and Baptized” (2:42)

  • Handout:Spiritual Sickness

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using the whiteboard function to display the “Spiritual Sickness” handout so that students can write their findings and responses on it.

Assess Your Learning 5

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help you evaluate the goals you have set and the growth you have experienced so far during your study of the Book of Mormon.

  • Student preparation: Students could be invited to find a scripture in Mosiah 18Alma 16 about the Atonement of Jesus Christ that is meaningful to them.

  • Content to display: An image of a mountain or someone hiking a mountain; a picture of a person in the middle of a path, drawn on the board before class

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using the whiteboard function so that students can share what they have learned or felt during their study of the first half of the Book of Mormon. If you decide to use the exercise that helps students explain the Atonement of Jesus Christ, consider placing students into small breakout rooms.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 12

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students review and practice understanding and applying doctrinal mastery passages they have studied.

  • Student preparation: Consider inviting students to select two of the doctrinal mastery passages between 1 Nephi and Mosiah and ponder what they could do to understand and apply them.

  • Handout:First 12 Doctrinal Mastery Passages and Key Phrases

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: At the beginning of the lesson, as students share their advice about how to understand the scriptures, compile a list of this advice where students can see it. This can be done using the whiteboard or chat feature. Add any ideas you feel would be helpful. Students may benefit from seeing these ideas as they strive to understand the doctrinal mastery passages they chose.
