Doctrinal Mastery Review 8
Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases
Remembering scripture passages and what they teach can help you in many ways. This lesson is intended to help you memorize one or more scripture references and key scripture phrases from the first 12 doctrinal mastery passages in the Book of Mormon.
Using artwork and other images. One way to help students remember gospel stories, doctrine, and principles is using images, including artwork and graphics. Invite students to consider their feelings and thoughts as they look at the images.
Student preparation: Consider inviting students to bring or be prepared to describe their favorite image of Jesus Christ and to share what it helps them remember about Him.
Possible Learning Activities
A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught when seminary is in session.
Pictures and memory
If students completed the student preparation, invite them to share the image they brought and their thoughts. You could also give them a few minutes to search for an image on an electronic device, if they have one. Alternatively, display images of the Savior and invite students to answer the following question.
-
What are some things we might learn about Jesus Christ from looking at these images?
Images can help us remember important events or truths. In this lesson, you will have an opportunity to use images to help you memorize the scripture reference and key scripture phrase for one or more Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages.
The first 12 Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages are listed below. Consider marking these passages and their key scripture phrases.
Display the following chart so that students can refer to it throughout the lesson.

Connecting images with gospel teachings
Review the following scripture references and try to remember their key scripture phrases. Use the chart above if needed. Then, match each scripture reference with the image that best illustrates the teaching in the scripture passage.
Consider displaying a variety of images that could relate to the following passages and inviting students to select the ones they relate to most and to explain why. Alternatively, invite students to search in the Church Media Library for images that would help them remember the truths in the following passages.
Create an image
The following activity can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Consider creating an example drawing with the class, then inviting students to create their own.
Choose a doctrinal mastery reference and key scripture phrase you would like to remember better. Draw a picture to help you remember the key scripture phrase, and include the reference. Your picture could be a scene, or it could contain different images to illustrate the key scripture phrase. For example, the following illustration could help you remember 2 Nephi 2:25: “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” If you have time, you could create something that could help you memorize the entire passage that you choose.
Allow students to share their images in pairs, in small groups, or with the class. Ask them to explain how the image will help them remember the scripture reference and key scripture phrase. Invite students to look for an opportunity to share their image with their family or a friend. Consider using the following questions to help them deepen their understanding of the passage they chose.
-
What does this passage help you understand about Jesus Christ and His gospel?
-
How might remembering this passage help you remember or become more like the Savior?
-
What is an experience you or others have had that relates to the doctrine in this scripture passage?
