Apply Doctrinal Mastery Passages

One of the overarching purposes of doctrinal mastery, and of this lesson specifically, is to help you learn how to apply the doctrine taught in the doctrinal mastery passages to real-life situations.

Helping students find answers to their questions. It is not a teacher’s responsibility to answer every question students ask. Help students apply the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge so they can discover answers for themselves. Encourage students to faithfully turn to and trust in the Lord.

Student preparation: Invite students to review a few doctrinal mastery passages they have already studied and to ponder how those passages might apply to a teenager’s life today.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by your area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

Jesus Christ and His gospel can change lives

To apply scriptures in our lives is to act on what they teach.

Consider showing the following video as an example of how applying scriptural truths can influence our lives, or share a personal story to illustrate this idea.

Consider doing the following activity on the board as a class and inviting students to complete it in their study journals. Briefly discuss students’ responses.

Draw a line down the middle of a page in your study journal. On the top of one side write “Before,” and on the top of the other side write “After.” Think of some examples of people you know or people in the scriptures whose lives improved through learning and applying the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ contained in the scriptures. In the “Before” column, briefly list words or phrases that describe what the people were like or what they did before applying the scriptures. In the “After” column, briefly describe the changes the Savior helped them make as they applied truths from the scriptures.

  • How were the scriptures instrumental in the Savior helping those people make changes?

Write a scenario about someone your age who is experiencing challenges that might be common to youth in your area. The scenario could be real or imagined but should not describe anyone your classmates or teacher might know. Include details such as their age, gender, family situation, whether they are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a few problems or challenges they are currently facing.

Once students have written down their scenario, it may be helpful to have them put a distinct mark on the paper so they know it is theirs. Then they could exchange with another student in the class. Alternatively, all students could turn their papers in. You could shuffle the papers and then redistribute them so that each student has a scenario written by a classmate.

Invite students to ponder and perhaps write their responses to the following questions based on the scenario they just received from a classmate or based on their own scenario if they did not exchange.

  • Given the circumstances this youth is in and the problems they are facing, what are some of the questions they might have and emotions they might be experiencing? Why?

  • What do you know about how the Savior feels about them and how He can help them?

Understanding and applying the scriptures

Review the following doctrinal mastery passages from the first half of the Book of Mormon, looking for passages you feel might be beneficial for the youth in your scenario to understand and apply.

Display the following instructions, and invite students to complete the activity on the sheet they received from their classmate or on their own sheet if they did not exchange.

Write a brief letter to help this person with their current circumstances. Include the following:

  • At least one doctrinal mastery passage from the above chart and other helpful scripture passages, along with truths from the passages that you feel would be helpful to this youth.

  • A few ways they could apply those truths and what blessings they might receive from Heavenly Father as they do. It may be helpful to share an example of how you, someone you know, or someone in the scriptures has applied those truths and the blessings that followed.

  • How Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ could help the youth apply these truths.

After sufficient time, invite students to bring their letters up and to place them on the floor where they can be seen clearly. Invite students to find the paper with their scenario and to read the response provided by their classmate. If there is time, students could select another doctrinal mastery passage that applies to the scenario they created. When they are done, invite them to share what they learned from this activity. Ask them to share ways that they felt the love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as they did the activity. Invite them to consider what they would like to apply in their own lives based on what they learned and felt in this lesson.
