Apply

This lesson will give you an opportunity to apply Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages to real-life situations.

A real-life situation

Think about the youth that you know. Ponder some of their family situations, what they enjoy, and some of the challenges they face. Consider this information as you create an imaginary but realistic scenario to use throughout this lesson by filling in the following blanks:

  • (Insert name) is years old and has people in (his/her) family. (He/she) loves to , , and . Some of the challenges (he/she) is facing are , , and . (He/she) feels (his/her) testimony of Jesus Christ is .

One way the Lord guides us through our challenges is through His teachings in the scriptures. As we study and apply the teachings in the scriptures, we can find answers to help us in our lives.

  • What is the value of understanding the scriptures and applying them in our lives?

  • What are ways you have successfully applied scriptural teachings in your life?

Elder Craig C. Christensen of the Seventy explained how Joseph Smith used a pattern to successfully apply scriptural teachings:

Joseph allowed the scriptures to penetrate his heart. He pondered them deeply and applied them to his own situation. He then acted on what he had learned. (Craig C. Christensen, “I Know These Things of Myself,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2014, 51)

  • What stands out to you from Elder Christensen’s statement?

You may have seen the following pattern in Joseph’s example:

  1. Study the scriptures with an open heart.

  2. Ponder them deeply.

  3. Apply the teachings to the situation.

  4. Act on what was learned.

Using the pattern

  1. Complete the following activity:

Reflect on the scenario you created earlier. Review the following doctrinal mastery passages and write on the paper under your scenario the reference of one of these passages that you feel would be helpful for the person in your scenario to apply. Follow the first three steps of the pattern above. Study the passage with an open heart. Ponder the passage deeply. Then write down why you feel that passage would be helpful for the person to apply.

Applying the scriptures

To continue following the pattern above, seek to apply the scripture you chose to the person in your scenario by inviting him or her to act on what is taught. The following steps could be helpful in doing this:

  1. Complete the following:

    1. Record one or two ways this person could act in faith based on the truths in the doctrinal mastery passage. For example, someone striving to apply the teachings in Ether 12:27 might seek ways to develop the Christlike attribute of humility or take actions to come unto Christ, such as partaking of the sacrament each week with an intentional focus on the Savior.

    2. Record what you would say to encourage and motivate this person to act on what he or she has learned. Include how applying the message could influence the person’s relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and his or her desire and ability to become like Them.

    3. Record your testimony of the truth taught in the passage or an experience related to it.

Applying passages in your life

  • How do the truths you studied and pondered apply to your life circumstances?

  • What actions do you feel inspired to take? (For example, you could identify ways to adjust your own personal scripture study to focus more intently on applying the truths you find. Consider how you could use the pattern you practiced in this lesson to do so.)

  • How could your actions influence your relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?
