Remembering scripture passages and what is taught in them can bless you in many ways. This lesson can help you memorize the scripture references and key scripture phrases for doctrinal mastery passages in the Book of Mormon.

Remembering

  • What is something that you feel like you will always remember? Why?

Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught that “our Savior invites us to always remember Him as He always remembers us” (“Always Remember Him,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2016, 110).

  • Why do you think Heavenly Father wants us to always remember His Son?

  • What are some ways you have been able to remember Jesus Christ each day?

  • How has remembering the Savior and all He has done been a blessing in your life?

One important way you can remember Jesus Christ is to memorize His teachings in the scriptures. In this lesson, you will have an opportunity to memorize some of the doctrinal mastery scripture references and key scripture phrases contained in the following chart. As you memorize, ponder how recalling these references and key phrases can help you remember Jesus Christ more each day.

Consider marking these passages along with their key phrases if you have not yet done so.

Identify four passages that you feel would most help you remember Jesus Christ right now in your life, and think about why you feel that way. Then do the following activity. You could do a similar activity using the Doctrinal Mastery mobile app instead.

  1. Cut a sheet of paper into four strips of equal size. For each of the doctrinal mastery passages you chose, do the following:

    1. Write the scripture reference and its associated key phrase on a strip of paper.

    2. Cut the key phrase off, dividing it from the reference, as in the example below (cutting at the “/” symbol):

2 Nephi 26:33 / “All are alike unto God.”

  2. When you have a set of four references and key scripture phrases, place the papers in a pile and mix them all together.

  3. Try to match each reference to its key scripture phrase without looking at anything to help you. Consider doing this two or three times. You could time yourself and try to improve your speed each time.

  4. Increase the difficulty by cutting the phrases apart as in the examples below:

2 Nephi 28:30 / God “will give unto the children of men / line upon line, / precept upon precept.”

2 Nephi 32:3 / “Feast upon / the words of Christ; / for behold, / the words of Christ / will tell you / all things / what ye should do.”

  5. Mix up the pieces and try to organize them correctly. You can choose to mix all the references and phrases together at once, or you can work on one passage at a time. Consider doing this two or three times. You could time yourself and try to improve your speed each time.

  6. If you have more time, select a few more doctrinal mastery passages and repeat the process.

  1. Answer two of the following questions:

    • Which doctrinal mastery references and key scripture phrases did you memorize?

    • Which passage do you feel is most helpful to you right now in your life? Why do you feel that way?

    • In what ways can the passages you focused on today help you remember Jesus Christ?
