To help us understand the Lord, Psalm 23 calls Him a shepherd. In his general conference address “True Shepherds,” President Thomas S. Monson (1927–2018) described a shepherd he once saw in Germany: “I saw a shepherd with a staff in his hand, leading the sheep. They followed him wherever he went. If he moved to the left, they followed him to the left. If he moved to the right, they followed him in that direction.”1

Consider reading Psalm 23 to find the answers to these questions:

  • How does the Lord guide us?

  • How does the Lord keep us safe?

  • How has the Lord comforted you when you felt like you were in “the valley of the shadow of death”? (Psalm 23:4).

As difficult as our trials may seem, “we have a champion, a Savior, who walked through the valley of the shadow of death on our behalf.”2
