I still count to ﬁve
when I gather forks
to set the dinner table
or when I calculate
the brownie cuts
so that all have equal parts.

I still count you in
my unconscious movement,
the momentary minutia of my days.

You are absent
but not from my thoughts
or pulse
or breath.
