Wheeler Baldwin
(1793–1887)
Wheeler Baldwin was born in New York. In 1812 he married Mary Porter, after which he served in the War of 1812. By 1830, he moved to Ohio, where, in January 1831, he was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By June 1831 he was ordained an elder and then a high priest. That month he was appointed by revelation to serve a mission to Missouri (Doctrine and Covenants 52:31), after which he moved to Jackson County, Missouri. He served as the presiding elder of a branch there in 1832 and attended high priest meetings in Jackson County in 1832 and 1833. Baldwin moved with the Saints to Lee County, Iowa Territory, by 1840 and to Pottawattamie County, Iowa, by 1850.
In the 1850s, Baldwin participated in several other churches claiming a line of succession from the Prophet Joseph Smith, ultimately joining the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the fall of 1859.
