Vienna Jaques was born in Beverly, Massachusetts. She was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1831. By November 1832, she moved to Kirtland, Ohio. Jaques consecrated a substantial sum of money to the Church. On 8 March 1833, a revelation through Joseph Smith directed her to relocate from Kirtland to Jackson County, Missouri (Doctrine and Covenants 90:28–31). By July 1833, she moved to Missouri. The following year, she helped attend to sick members of the Camp of Israel expedition. She married Daniel Shearer in about 1839 and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, by 1842. She traveled with other Saints to Utah Territory in 1847. She is one of only two women mentioned by name in the Doctrine and Covenants, the other being Emma Smith.
