Jesse Gause

(ca. 1784–1836)

Jesse Gause was born in East Marlborough, Pennsylvania. In 1815, he married Martha Johnson, who died in 1828. He married Minerva Byram in 1830. Before being baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1831 or 1832, he participated in the Society of Friends (commonly called Quakers) and then in the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (commonly called Shakers). In 1832, was appointed a counselor to Joseph Smith (see Doctrine and Covenants 81), served as a scribe to Joseph Smith, was appointed a member of the United Firm, traveled with Joseph Smith to Independence, Missouri, and began a mission with Zebedee Coltrin to several religious groups, including Shakers. He separated from Coltrin in August 1832 and apparently was excommunicated that December.
