George W. Harris

(1780–1857)

George W. Harris was born in Lanesboro, Massachusetts. He married a woman named Elizabeth in about 1800. Later he was remarried to a woman named Margaret, who died in 1828. In 1830, he married Lucinda Pendleton. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Orson Pratt in 1834 in Indiana. By 1836, he moved to Far West, Missouri. He was appointed to the Far West high council and ordained a high priest in April 1838. After being driven from Missouri by 1839, he moved to Illinois. There, in Commerce, which was later renamed Nauvoo, he was appointed to the high council in 1839. Harris started west with the Latter-day Saint exodus from Nauvoo in 1846 and served as bishop and a member of the high council at Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory, that same year. He died at Council Bluffs.
