Eden Smith

(1806–51)

Eden Smith was born in Indiana in 1806. Sometime before December 1831, he was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission to Ohio in December 1831. In January 1832, he and Micah B. Welton were instructed by revelation to “be united in the ministry” (Doctrine and Covenants 75:30, 36). That March, another revelation called Smith and Stephen Burnett to preach the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 80). In August 1834, Smith was rebaptized in Eugene, Indiana. By May 1842, he had moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, where he was appointed a first lieutenant in the Nauvoo Legion and married Mary Jane Angel. In April 1843, he was called on a mission to Erie County, Pennsylvania.
