Warren A. Cowdery

(1788–1851)

Warren A. Cowdery, an older brother of Oliver Cowdery, was born in Wells, Vermont, in 1788. He married Patience Simonds in 1814. In 1834 Cowdery was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and appointed presiding elder of the Church at Freedom, New York (Doctrine and Covenants 106). In February 1836, he moved to Kirtland, Ohio, where he was editor of the Church’s newspaper Latter Day Saints’ Messenger and Advocate. He also served as Joseph Smith’s clerk and as a member of the Kirtland high council. In 1838 he became disaffected with Church leadership and remained in Kirtland after many of the Saints left.
