Samuel Bent

(1778–1846)

Samuel Bent was born in Barre, Massachusetts. He married Mary Kilburn in 1805. In 1833 he was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was ordained an elder, and served a mission to Michigan Territory. He participated in the Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri in 1834 and attended the solemn assembly in the Kirtland Temple in 1836. Later that year, he moved to Missouri, where, in 1837, he was remarried to Lettice Palmer. By August 1837, he was serving on the Far West high council. By October 1839, he moved to Commerce, Illinois, which was later renamed Nauvoo. There he was appointed a member of the Nauvoo high council (see Doctrine and Covenants 124:132). He was appointed in 1840 to serve a mission to Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio to collect money to pay for Church loans and book printing. In 1844, Bent was admitted to the Council of Fifty and served a mission to Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. After leaving Nauvoo in 1846, he presided over the branch of the Church in Garden Grove, Iowa Territory.
