Peter Whitmer Jr.

(1809–36)

Peter Whitmer Jr. was born at Fayette, New York. He was baptized in Seneca County, New York, in June 1829. Whitmer was one of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, and he was present when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially established on 6 April 1830. Two early revelations were directed wholly or in part to Whitmer (Doctrine and Covenants 16; 30). Between the fall of 1830 and the summer of 1831, after being called by revelation (Doctrine and Covenants 32), Whitmer served a mission in western Missouri and across the Missouri border in Indian Territory. In 1832 he married Vashti Higley. He moved to Clay County, Missouri, in 1833 and was appointed to the Clay County high council in January 1836. He died in Clay County the following September.
