Peter Haws

(1796–1862)

Peter Haws was born in Leeds County, Johnstown District (later in Ontario), Upper Canada. He married Charlotte Harrington. After being baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he moved to Kirtland, Ohio. He served a mission with Erastus Snow to Illinois in 1839 and then moved to Illinois about that same year. Haws served as an alternate on the high council at Nauvoo, Illinois, from 1840 to 1844. He also served as a trustee of the Nauvoo House Association (see Doctrine and Covenants 124:62, 70). He was ordained a high priest in 1841. In 1843, he served a mission with Amasa Lyman to raise funds for the construction of the Nauvoo Temple and the Nauvoo House; later that year, he served a mission to Mississippi and Alabama. In March 1844, he was admitted to the Council of Fifty. In 1846 Haws moved to what later became Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory. After visiting Lyman Wight’s colony in Texas in 1848, he returned to Council Bluffs, where he was excommunicated in 1849.
