John S. Carter

(ca. 1792–1834)

John S. Carter was born around 1792. In 1813 he married Elizabeth (Betsey) Kinyon in Benson, Vermont. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints around 1832. Later that year, he accompanied his brother Jared on a mission to Vermont. He then helped Jared and another brother, Simeon, establish Church branches at North West Bay and Bolton, Vermont. In 1834 Carter was ordained a high priest; appointed to serve on the Church’s first high council, in Kirtland, Ohio (Doctrine and Covenants 102:3, 34); and called to accompany Jesse Smith on a mission to the eastern United States. After traveling to Missouri with the Camp of Israel expedition, Carter died from cholera in Clay County, Missouri.
