John Johnson

(1778–1843)

John Johnson was born in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. In 1800, he married Alice (Elsa) Jacobs. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints around 1831. Joseph Smith lived at the Johnsons’ home in Hiram, Ohio, in 1831–1832; Joseph Smith received sixteen revelations while there (see Doctrine and Covenants, “Chronological Order of Contents”). Johnson moved to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1833, where he was ordained an elder by Joseph Smith. That summer Johnson was ordained a high priest and appointed a member of the United Firm (Doctrine and Covenants 96:8). He provided funds to the Church for the purchase of 103 acres of land, on which the Saints built homes, a schoolhouse, and the temple in Kirtland. He was a member of the Church’s first high council in 1834–1837 (Doctrine and Covenants 102:3, 34) and became a stockholder in the Kirtland Safety Society. He became disaffected from the Church in 1837–1838 and died in Kirtland.
