John F. Boynton was born in East Bradford, Massachusetts, in 1811. He was baptized in Kirtland, Ohio, in September 1832, and two months later he was ordained an elder. Between 1832 and 1834, he served missions in Pennsylvania, Maine, and Ohio. Boynton was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in February 1835, and later that year he accompanied the Twelve on a mission to the eastern United States and Canada.
