Charles C. Rich was born in Campbell County, Kentucky. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 1832 and was ordained an elder the next month. He participated in the Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri in 1834. In the following years, he served a mission to Illinois, was ordained a high priest, and became the president of the high priests quorum in Missouri. He married Sarah DeArmon Pea in 1838. In 1839 he moved to Commerce, Illinois, which was later renamed Nauvoo, where he was appointed a member of the Nauvoo stake high council. Later he served in the Nauvoo stake presidency as well as in several civic positions. In 1842–44 he served missions to Illinois and Michigan and was admitted to the Council of Fifty. The following year, he was elected a trustee of the town of Nauvoo. In 1846, Rich served as the presiding elder in Mount Pisgah, Iowa Territory. He migrated to the Salt Lake Valley, in Utah Territory, in 1847 and was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles by Brigham Young in 1849. He later served several missions and served on the construction committee for the temple in Logan, Utah Territory.
