Neighbor Languages

Sweden, Denmark, and Norway are neighbor countries with similar languages. Many Swedish speakers can understand Danish and Norwegian too.

This beautiful temple was finished in 1985. In 1995, President Thomas S. Monson gave a tour of the grounds to Sweden’s king and queen.

Kubb

Here’s a version of an outdoor Swedish game you can play. Set up 10 wooden blocks in two lines, far apart. Put a larger wooden block in the middle to be the “king.” Split into two teams. Each person takes turns tossing a ball or wooden rod at the other team’s blocks to knock them over. When all the blocks have fallen, the team tries to knock over the king to win. But be careful—if you knock over the king before the other blocks are down, you lose!

Köttbullar (Swedish Meatballs)

1. In a large bowl, soak 3/4 cup of breadcrumbs in 1 1/4 cup of milk for a few minutes.

2. Mix 1 pound (450 g) of ground beef or pork, 1 egg, 1 onion (diced), and a pinch of salt, pepper, and allspice with the breadcrumb mixture.

3. Shape the meat mixture into small balls.

4. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 20–25 minutes or until the meatballs are brown.

5. Serve with brown gravy, mashed potatoes, and jam, Swedish style!
