Guide to the Friend

The Guide to the Friend can help you find stories or articles for preparing lessons or talks for church or for family home evening. The Primary theme for February is “My faith in Jesus Christ grows when I know who He is.”

Family Home Evening Ideas

Look for the FHE symbol on the [original magazine] pages mentioned below.

  1. Read “Sustaining Bishop Sheets” (pp. 10–12). Ask family members to tell something they like about the bishop of your ward or the president of your branch. Then discuss what you will do to show appreciation and lighten his load.

  2. President Hinckley has asked us to “be smart.” In “Being Smart” (pp. 34–36) Olivia doesn’t understand this counsel. Why? Discuss what it means to be smart. Tell your family stories of people making choices and have them explain why the choices are smart or not so smart. Agree on some things you can all do to become smarter.

  3. Read “Best Friends” (pp. 40–42). Invite each family member to say what he or she will do to become a better friend to the others. For example: “I will be a better friend to Bill by really listening to him.”

  4. Do the “What Should I Wear?” activity on pages 24–25. Then have family members dress for activities of their choice. For example, appear in your basketball or dance costume and say, “I’m going to Primary.” Let others say “do” or “don’t” and explain why.

  5. Read the poem “God’s Love” (p. 7) and enjoy Strawberry Squares (p. 43) as you draw pictures of Heavenly Father’s creations.
