Guide to the Friend

The Guide to the Friend can help you find stories or articles for preparing lessons or talks for church or for family home evening. Look for the FHE symbol on the [original magazine] pages mentioned in the Family Home Evening Ideas. The Primary theme for July is “Temples bless Heavenly Father’s children throughout the world today.”

Family Home Evening Ideas

  1. Read “Laying the Cornerstone” (pages 4–6) and then talk about some of the differences between the lives of pioneer children and our lives today. Next read “Pioneer Sacrifices” (page 7) by Elder M. Russell Ballard. Discuss how we can be pioneers today. End with the statement by Elder Dallin H. Oaks (page 6).

  2. Briefly tell the story of the “March of the Mormon Battalion” and play the game (pages 24–25). Talk about some of the sacrifices you can make or the opportunities you have to help the work of the Church “march” forward.

  3. Do the Funstuf activity “Honor Jesus Christ” (page 23). Each of the answers gives us a way we can honor the Savior. Make a list of them, and try to do them this week. End by learning the song “Holding Hands Around the World” (pages 44–45) and singing it together.

  4. Share the story “Eugene’s Quiet Place” (pages 10–12). Remember together some of the prophets who have found their own special place to pray (Joseph Smith, Nephi, Enos, and so on). Resolve that each day this week, in your own quiet places, you will take time to thank Heavenly Father for your many blessings. Make a copy of Journal Page (page 13) for every family member.
