“Scarecrow,” Friend, Oct. 1987, 31

Scarecrow

By Edith E. Cutting

Pumpkin head

With toothy grin;

Old straw hat

With ragged brim—

Cornstalk arms

That fray and twist;

Gloves that droop

From cornstalk wrist—

Pants all patched

With rags and things

And tied on tight

With apron strings—

Straw-filled friend,

The birds all know

That you won’t hurt

A single crow!
