Missionary Scriptures Contest

Missionaries—both elders and sisters—need to know the scriptures. Here is an activity to help you learn some of the key scriptures used in discussions by missionaries today. You may want to compete with your friends, or you can use it for a family home evening activity. Try it first in teams; then, when you get really good at it, try it as individual competitors.

Instructions

  1. Make a copy of the answers for everyone.

  2. Study the answers for a week. (Suggestion: Practice with each other while doing dishes or riding in the car or getting ready for bed.)

  3. Choose a contest judge to read the clues, judge the accuracy of the answers, and keep score.

To Play

The judge calls out at random a discussion number, title, letter, and subtitle. (Example: “Discussion 4, Eternal Progression, C, Families Forever.”) The first player to raise his hand gives the reference, quotes the scripture, then tells what the scripture means. The player gets the points indicated for each correct answer that he gives. If he does not answer all parts correctly, another player may raise his hand and get the indicated points for his correct answers. For team competition, players may consult briefly and each part of the answer could be given by a different member of the same team.

Scoring

  • 1 point for each correct reference

  • 2 points for each correct interpretation (judge’s decision is final)

  • points as marked in parentheses at the end of each scripture for reciting it exactly as given here

  • 5-point bonus for earning all possible points for a clue

  • bonus points may be awarded by judge for correct answers by younger children
