Mr. Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1970. Mr. Gumpy takes two children and his animal friends for a boat ride that ends in a wet walk home across the English countryside and an invitation for a ride another day.

Potatoes, Potatoes by Anita Lobel. Harper and Row, 1967. A large potato field is where the war between East and West begins and finally ends for a loving mother and her two sons.

The Pair of Shoes by Aline Glasgow; illustrated by Symeon Shimin. Dial Press, 1971. One pair of shoes is shared by a family of five until a boy’s decision helps everyone learn that there is more to life than shoes to wear or books to read. The lovely illustrations add to the beauty of this unusual story.
