“Navajo Sun,” Friend, July 1972, 9

Navajo Sun

Sun is a blanket folding over the land,

Over the brown earth folding,

Over the red rocks

And the gray sage.

Sun crowds the air with brightness

And stares into the canyons.

Sun bakes the mud

And makes the weeds reach deep,

Fingering the earth for shade.
