Inside front: City of Joseph, by Eric Dowdle, water color, 36″ x 42″, 1993. In this stylized painting, the Nauvoo Temple overlooks the city below. Located on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, the city was named Nauvoo, meaning, “a beautiful location, a place of rest.” It served as headquarters to the Church and home to many members from 1839 to 1846.

Inside back: “And We Talk of Christ,” by Trent Gudmundsen, oil on canvas, 60″ x 48″, 1997. Courtesy of Museum of Church History and Art, Fifth International Art Competition. A teaching moment is portrayed here as a young boy listens to his grandfather’s words. Light filters through the trees as spiritual light and knowledge are filtered through the generations: “And we talk of Christ, … that our children may know” (2 Ne. 25:26).
