Announcing Winners of the 1978 Writing Contests

In 1977, the Ensign sponsored the third All-Church Writing Contest and the Relief Society sponsored the third Eliza R. Snow Poetry Writing Contest for Women. Entries poured in—almost a thousand, and unfortunately some of them were disqualified from the outset because they did not meet the entrance rules. A breakdown shows 396 poems, 121 short stories, and 109 articles accepted for the All-Church Writing Contest, and 349 poems in the Eliza R. Snow Poetry Writing Contest for Women—a total that’s up 154 from last year’s entries.

Winners of the 1977 All-Church Writing Contest are:

Short story division: First prize ($150), Penny Allen of Bountiful, Utah, for “Dandelions” (page 40); second prize ($100), Olga Sanders Whitaker of Vale, Oregon, for “For Myself and Others Too”; and third prize ($75), Diane A. Gordon of Orem, Utah, for “A Treasure to Be Desired.”

Article division: First prize ($150), Jeanne Noble Randall of West Bend, Wisconsin, for “We Outlived Wisconsin’s Ice Storm” (page 36); second prize ($100), Joy Nelson Hulme of Monte Sereno, California, for “Tender Triumph”; and third prize ($75), Anya Bateman of Salt Lake City, Utah, for “For the Joy.”

Sheffield of San Leandro, California, for “Lucy Mack Smith” (page 43); second prize ($50), Marilyn McMeen Miller Brown of Provo, Utah, for “Journey of a Blind Grandmother, Ending” (page 43); and third prize ($40), Randall T.
