Understanding how important these murals are to Latter-day Saints, we feel privileged to have seen them and cared for them.
The biggest challenge, of course, was the creation room, the first room. And that's where we spent most of the time, because it had all the layers of former restorations on it. A lot of overpaint, and it was cracking the code to figure out how to get off all those layers without injuring the original artwork.
He was an exceptional artist and people didn't see that until we took off all the other renovations.
Canvas mural is glued to a plaster wall.
The plaster cracks and then it transfers to the canvas.
We have to be surgical in everything we do to repair.
Despite everything they’ve been through,
after our work now, they’re in excellent condition, and they’re just... they’re beautiful.
These murals serve a purpose, and we hope that they stay preserved for many, many more generations.
