In our desire to
know the Savior, I can't tell you how important
it is to read His words and to study the
scriptures daily. I can't tell you how many times,
as I have opened the scriptures and been reading about
something that seemed unrelated to something else, suddenly,
thoughts and impressions have come flowing into
my mind and spirit, helping me to understand
something that I wasn't even thinking about. The Lord uses the
scriptures to speak to us. In the illustrations
in chapter 4, we point out two stories that
are some of my favorites. The first, as you know,
is the story of Nephi and him building a ship. And many times, when I've
been in a difficult situation where I needed the
strength of the Lord, I have read these words. "If God had commanded me to
do all things I could do them. If He should command me that
I should say into this water, be thou earth, it should be
earth; and if I should say it, it would be done. And now, if the Lord
has such great power, and has wrought so many miracles
among the children of men, how is it that he
cannot instruct me, that I should build a ship?" And how is it that
he couldn't help us to put away some of our
unsavory patterns, the things we don't like about what we
do, and help us become someone better? He can do it. I love, also, the story that we
use about the people of Ammon. Think about how absolutely
sinful they were and how the Lord lifted
that sin from them. I love these words. "And I also thank my God,"
this is the King speaking, "yea, my great God, that
he hath granted unto us that we might repent
of these things, and also that he hath
forgiven us of those many sins and murders which we have
committed, and taken away the guilt from our hearts,
through the merits of His Son." I give you my witness
that the Son of God has power to take the
guilt from our hearts. I have felt it, and
I promise it to you.
