Joseph Smith

Messages of Joseph Smith: In the spring of 1820, 14-year-old Joseph Smith was searching for the true Church of Jesus Christ when he read a passage in the Bible: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5; see also Joseph Smith—History 1:11–12). With simple, unwavering faith, young Joseph went alone to a grove of trees, where he prayed to know which church he should join. In answer to his prayer, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. This episode of Music with a Message features music related to Joseph Smith by the following artists: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, “Joseph Smith’s First Prayer”; Peter Breinholt, “Any Other Boy”; Dan Cahoon, “The Prayer”; Kenneth Cope, “Learning for Myself”; Gabe Redondo, “What’s a Boy to Do?”; Jason Deere, “Brother, I’ll Follow You”; David Osmond, “American Dreams”; Kenneth Cope and Randy Thorderson, “Brothers”; Jenny Frogley, “Praise the Man”; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, “Praise to the Man.”

Repentance

Messages of Repentance: Repentance is one of the first principles of the gospel and is essential to our temporal and eternal happiness. It is a change of mind and heart that gives us a fresh view about God, about ourselves, and about the world. How marvelous the promise of the Lord: “Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more” (D&C 58:42). This episode of Music with a Message features messages of repentance by the following artists: Kenneth Cope, “Man to Man”; Julie de Azevedo, “Mercy’s Arms”; Mindy Gledhill, “A Little More Like Thee”; Marie Pearson, “Lullaby for Me”; One Clear Voice, “Change”; John Batdorf, “Don’t You Know?”; Hilary Weeks, “Take Me There”; Mercy River, “The Flute.”

Sacrifice

Messages of Sacrifice: To sacrifice is to give up something valuable or precious, often with the intent of accomplishing a greater purpose or goal. Sacrifice has always been a part of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This episode of Music with a Message features messages of sacrifice by the following artists: Wayne Burton, “What Would I Give?”; Kenneth Cope, “Broken”; Jenny Phillips, Kelly Shepherdson, and Brooke Holyoak, “Live in the Light”; Rick Logan, “All for You”; Vocal Point, “Praise to the Man”; Jenny Jordan Frogley, “In the Meantime”; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, “Come, Come, Ye Saints”; the BYU Singers, “I Stand All Amazed.”

Service

Messages of Service: During His ministry on the earth, Jesus Christ spent His time serving and helping others. True disciples of Jesus Christ do likewise. The Savior said, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35). Opportunities for service to others are limitless. Kind words and deeds can lift burdens and gladden hearts. One true key to happiness is to labor for the happiness of others. This episode of Music with a Message features messages of service by the following artists: the Utah Chamber Artists, “As I Have Loved You”; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief”; the Jenny Phillips Choir, “Sisters Rejoice”; Jenny Jordan Frogley, “These Are the Days”; Rebecca Lopez, “Not Too Far from Here”; Julie de Azevedo, “The Hands of Heaven”; Kenneth Cope, “Because I Have Been Given Much”; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, “Called to Serve.”
