Your Stay at the MTC

We are very excited about your future arrival at the Peru Missionary Training Center. We hope that this information will be helpful as you make your final arrival preparations.

When should I arrive at the Peru MTC?

It is very important that all missionaries arrive at the Peru MTC before noon on their assigned Wednesday. It takes approximately two hours from landing at the airport to arrive at the MTC. Therefore, if your flight does not allow you to arrive before noon, you will need to arrive the afternoon of the day before. If you are arriving by ground transportation from Lima, we request that you arrive between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.

What if I am fluent in or speak some Spanish?

If you are assigned to go to the Provo MTC prior to the Peru MTC and you are fluent in Spanish and you have not spoken to someone at the Provo MTC, please call 801-422-2602 and ask for the Training receptionist.

What preparations are necessary before entering the MTC?

Your mission begins when you enter the MTC. Therefore, personal time is extremely limited. You must complete all preparations before entering the MTC, including the purchase of all clothing and personal items. You will not be able to leave the MTC to shop.

You should enter the MTC healthy, having already taken care of all health-related matters, including dental and eye exams and follow-up treatment. All medical tests requested on the Missionary Immunization/Preventive Medication Requirements form should be completed. (You or those providing for your support must pay for pre-mission medical conditions, including dental and eye care.)

You should be set apart as a full-time missionary by your stake president, receive a patriarchal blessing if possible, and, if you desire, receive a father's blessing before your arrival at the MTC. You are encouraged to bring a copy of your patriarchal blessing with you.

What should I bring to the MTC?

Bring the following when you come to the MTC:

  • All the items on the mission clothing list sent from the Missionary Department
  • Appropriate exercise clothing (five gym periods per week, one laundry day)
  • Warm clothing (if you will be at the MTC during the winter months)
  • If you will be endowed while at the MTC, it will occur about one week after your arrival, so bring appropriate underclothing.
  • Shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand soap, and towel
  • Current temple recommend
  • Money for personal items in US dollars or Peruvian Nuevo Soles (See “How will my expenses be handled?”)
  • Government-issued photo ID (such as, driver's license, passport, military ID, and so on). This ID is required by airport authorities.
  • A copy of your completed Missionary Immunization/Preventive Medication Requirements form
  • Money for required immunizations not received before entering the MTC
  • US postage stamps if you plan to use the “pouch” system

Please put your name on all personal belongings, including clothing and luggage.

Where should I report?

Report to the Peru MTC dressed in missionary attire with a proper missionary haircut.

Missionary Training Center
Melgarejo 159 La Molina
Lima 12

The Church Travel Department will arrange flights and subsequent ground transportation to the MTC.

If you will be driving to the Peru MTC, it is near the Lima Peru Temple. If you need additional assistance, call the area travel office at 317-7063 or 998-477-407.

How should I be dressed for my arrival?

Regular missionary attire is the standard for dress at the MTC. Elders should wear a suit coat on the day of their arrival. For more information on missionary dress and grooming, please refer to your call packet or see dress and grooming guidelines.

What supplies and services will the MTC provide?

All bedding supplies, towels, laundry facilities (including detergent), and meals are provided. An outside company provides barber services, and a private dry-cleaning service provides dry cleaning at the missionary's own expense.

How will my expenses be handled?

You do not need to bring money to the MTC for room and board, training materials, laundry, haircuts, or other essential personal care items. However, you must provide your own spending money for miscellaneous expenses.

The MTC does not have an onsite store or sell anything, nor does it have an automatic teller machine. Any cash you bring should be Peruvian Nuevo Soles or US dollars.

May my family come to the MTC?

On your scheduled arrival date, many new missionaries will be arriving at the MTC within a very short period of time. Missionaries with their luggage will be dropped off at the gate. Farewell activities with family and friends, including picture taking, should take place prior to your arrival at the MTC.

May I have visitors at the MTC?

Your training schedule will not allow time for visits from family or friends. Please advise your family not to request visits, because such visits will distract you and your companion from your training. Please do not meet your family or friends at the temple at any time or at the airport upon departure. Church leaders have asked that missionaries not be excused from the MTC to attend funerals, marriages, farewells, baptisms, or other family events. While you are at the MTC, all communications with family and others should be limited to weekly family e-mails or weekly letters.

May my family deliver packages to the MTC?

Any item delivered to you at the MTC should be addressed with your full name and mission assignment. Any package dropped off will be inspected by the MTC guards and accounted for before delivery to the missionary. Please do not mail packages to the Peru MTC. We recommend packages be sent directly to the mission where the missionary will serve, instead of to the MTC.

Is it possible to receive immunizations at the MTC?

You should receive all required immunizations before entering the MTC. However, you will be able to purchase required immunizations at the MTC if necessary. Please bring money to pay for such immunizations.

What about travel from the MTC to the mission field?

The Church Travel Department will handle arrangements for your travel to the field. They will also give you official instructions for your passport and visa. You must follow these instructions carefully. You may be requested to send certain required documents for a visa. If you do not submit these documents by the requested date, your departure to the field may be delayed. Your departure may also be delayed because visas to certain countries are difficult to obtain.
