What to Expect

The Pioneer Saints Cemetery is a self-directed experience open to the public. You are free to walk around the cemetery and look at the headstones and the monument. There is a kiosk along the path to the cemetery with names of those who died in Nauvoo.

The cemetery is carefully monitored and maintained as a historic cemetery. Please do not disturb fallen or broken headstones. Moving them can cause further damage.

Parking

  • There is parking available at the start of the trail to the cemetery.
    • There is no designated accessible parking. However, the size of this parking lot will be able to accommodate visitors’ vehicles with accessibility needs if the lot is not full.

  • The cemetery is uphill from the parking lot. There is a gravel path, as well as a steep set of stairs from the memorial kiosk.

  • Sidewalk: Gravel path (fair condition); sloped
    • In the fall, there may be fallen leaves on the path.
    • In the winter, there may be snow on the path.
  • Terrain: Grass with some fallen headstones (fair condition); uneven
