Vida pessoal

Jeffrey R. Holland nasceu no dia 3 de dezembro de 1940, filho de Frank D. e Alice Bentley Holland. Em 1963, casou-se com Patrícia Terry. Eles são os pais de Matthew, Mary Alice e David; sogros de Paige, Lee e Jeanne, e são avós de 13 lindos netos e dois bisnetos.

Foi, também, líder estudantil e atleta acadêmico no Colégio Dixie e na Faculdade Dixie em sua cidade natal, St. George, Utah. Formou-se bacharel em inglês e recebeu o título de mestre em educação religiosa pela Universidade Brigham Young. Obteve os títulos de mestre e doutor em filosofia em Estudos Americanos pela Universidade de Yale.

Vida profissional

Quando foi chamado para o Quórum dos Doze, o élder Holland servia como membro do primeiro quórum dos setenta, para o qual foi chamado em 1º de abril de 1989. De 1980 até seu chamado como autoridade geral em 1989, Jeffrey R. Holland serviu como nono reitor da Universidade Brigham Young em Provo, Utah. Ele foi comissário de educação da Igreja e pró-reitor da Faculdade de Educação Religiosa na BYU.

O élder Holland exerceu ativamente a profissão de educador antes de seu chamado para servir em tempo integral na Igreja. Serviu como presidente da American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities (AAPICU), na diretoria da National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), e como membro da Comissão de Diretores e Reitores da National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA). Por seu trabalho para a melhoria do relacionamento entre cristãos e judeus, recebeu o prêmio “Torch of Liberty” [Tocha da Liberdade] da Liga Antidifamação do B’Nai B’rith.

Serviu no conselho diretor de uma série de corporações cívicas e comerciais, e recebeu o prêmio “Distinguished Eagle Scout” dos Escoteiros da América. É autor de oito livros, um dos quais em coautoria com a esposa Patrícia.
