Jeffrey R. Holland è nato il 3 dicembre 1940 da Frank D. e Alice Bentley Holland. Nel 1963 ha sposato Patricia Terry. I due sono i genitori di Matthew, Mary Alice e David, i suoceri di Paige, Lee e Jeanne, e i nonni di tredici bellissimi nipoti, oltre che di due pronipoti.

L’anziano Holland è stato rappresentante degli studenti e atleta alla Dixie High School e al Dixie College nella sua nativa St. George, nello Utah. Dal 1980 alla sua chiamata di Autorità generale nel 1989, Jeffrey R. Holland ha servito quale nono presidente della Brigham Young University a Provo, nello Utah.
