Jeffrey R. Holland è nato il 3 dicembre 1940 da Frank D. e Alice Bentley Holland. Nel 1963 ha sposato Patricia Terry. I due sono i genitori di Matthew, Mary Alice e David, i suoceri di Paige, Lee e Jeanne, e i nonni di tredici bellissimi nipoti, oltre che di due pronipoti.

L’anziano Holland è stato rappresentante degli studenti e atleta alla Dixie High School e al Dixie College nella sua nativa St. George, nello Utah. Il presidente Holland ha conseguito rispettivamente una laurea e un master in Inglese e in Istruzione religiosa presso la Brigham Young University. Al momento della chiamata nel Quorum dei Dodici, l’anziano Holland era membro del Primo Quorum dei Settanta, in cui era stato chiamato l’1 aprile 1989. Dal 1980 alla sua chiamata di Autorità generale nel 1989, Jeffrey R. Holland ha servito quale nono presidente della Brigham Young University a Provo, nello Utah. È stato Commissario della Chiesa per l’educazione e preside della Facoltà di istruzione religiosa presso la BYU.

Il presidente Holland ha lavorato nel campo dell’insegnamento prima della sua chiamata a tempo pieno nella Chiesa.
