What to Expect at the Ohio Historic Sites

If you are visiting the historic sites in Ohio for the first time, navigating the many things to do can be both exciting and daunting. We recommend that you begin your visit at the Historic Kirtland Visitors’ Center, where you will receive a brief orientation about the early Church in Ohio and learn about the many experiences you can participate in. Missionaries are available to answer questions and provide suggestions for your visit.

Once you leave the visitors’ center, you will receive a tour of Historic Kirtland. From there, we recommend that you visit the Kirtland Temple Visitors’ Center, where you can take a guided tour of the Kirtland Temple and walk the beautiful temple grounds. Also, don’t miss the Joseph and Emma Smith Home just north of the temple.

If you have a little more time, the Isaac and Lucy Morley Farm and the John and Elsa Johnson Home are well worth the drive. You can also find other significant locations to visit in the area on the All Locations page.

Getting Around

Historic Kirtland covers roughly 10 acres. The other historic sites in Ohio cover much smaller areas, but you will need to travel away from Historic Kirtland to visit them. There is no public transportation within the historic site, so we recommend driving to key locations and then getting out and walking.

Orientation Services

At the Historic Kirtland Visitors’ Center, you will find physical brochures to help you find your way around the site.

Before your visit, you can also download a PDF of the Historic Kirtland map.
