When should you pray?

How about always?

The answer to any question that starts with “Should I pray…” is YES. Even when it’s not a good idea to kneel down or close your eyes, you can pray in your mind. Heavenly Father always wants to hear from you.

That doesn’t mean we need to pray about trivial things—like which socks to wear—before moving forward with a decision. Part of becoming spiritually mature is learning which daily decisions need input from the Lord and which ones we can sort out on our own.

But if you’re ever unsure, pray about it! Given the choice between hearing from you “too often” and not often enough, Heavenly Father will gladly take the first option.

Nephi said “Ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save it in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ” (2 Nephi 32:9). That means it’s especially good to pray when dealing with spiritual things, like:

  • Church callings and assignments
  • Scripture study
  • Knowing how to best minister to others

The devil doesn’t want us to pray. He tries to make us feel unworthy to pray. (See 2 Nephi 32:8.) But God always wants to hear from you. Even when... maybe especially when... you’re not at your best! In good times and hard times and all the times in between, your loving Heavenly Father is listening.

How Are My Prayers?

How meaningful and frequent are your prayers right now? What could you do to have a closer communication with Heavenly Father?
