The night before Jesus called His twelve Apostles, He “went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). Then, in the morning, He gathered the people and extend those callings (see Luke 6:13-16).
The Gospels record several times when Jesus went to a mountain or other special place to be alone and pray.1 This sets an example for us about taking the time to speak with Heavenly Father before making important decisions.
Perhaps it was similar to President Russell N. Nelson’s experience choosing his counselors for the First Presidency in 2018. He said, “I wondered how I could possibly choose just two from twelve men whom I love and respect. Because I know that good inspiration is based upon good information, I prayerfully met one-on-one with each Apostle. I then sequestered myself in a private room in the temple and sought the Lord’s will.”2
The decisions we make may not affect the world as much as the Savior’s and the prophet’s decisions. But our choices affect our own lives as well as the lives of people around us. So let’s follow the Savior’s example and seek God’s help.
