Driven in Detroit: Bridges to Self-Reliance

Bridges to Self-Reliance: The Parkers, On the Road to Self Reliance

Although Raechel and her husband Lamar didn’t have good role models growing up, with the help of Elder and Sister Utley, they’ve been able to work towards a better future for themselves and their five children.

Lamar works a factory graveyard shift and Raechel works during the day at a daycare so it can be difficult to stay coordinated, but they make it work through a lot of teamwork. They are now working towards the goal of starting their own business and eventually seeing their children graduate from high school and attend college. As they speak about their experiences working together, it’s clear that both the Utleys and Parkers have a deep love and respect for each other.

Each ward and stake has unique needs as the members work together to care for the poor and needy. If you are interested in creating a similar inner-city project in your area, take a look at the following resources for priesthood leaders: Inner-city Training Materials
