President Uchtdorf wisely said, “In family relationships love is really spelled t-i-m-e, time. Taking time for each other is the key for harmony at home.”
Spending time together can be easier said than done, though, especially when each member of the family likes to spend his or her free time doing something different. The secret is discovering activities that everyone enjoys.
For example, the Lewis family, featured in the latest Happy Families episode, bond over trick roping. They love it so much that not only is it their favorite hobby; it’s also their business.
“I like doing roping with my family because it gives us a better relationship,” says Melinda Lewis. “If we didn’t do it, we probably wouldn’t be as close.”
Chances are, your family members aren’t professional trick ropers. So what activities can you do together to strengthen your relationships like the Lewises do? We have a few ideas.
Music: Playing instruments, performing for others, and attending musical concerts together are all great ways to develop personal talents and family bonds at the same time.
Sports: Whether you have a family of super athletes or not, a game of basketball, volleyball, or whatever you like is a fun way to work together. In another episode of Happy Families the Pereiras spend time supporting one member of their family at his soccer matches.
Missionary Work and Service: These things bring peace and perspective to any heart. Share the gospel with neighbors, visit the elderly, or bake bread for a struggling friend. The opportunities are endless.
