Fulfilling Your Duty to God by Serving Others

    November 8, 2018

Have you ever asked yourself, “What is my duty to God?”

The answer to this question can vary depending on what roles you have. For example, a parent’s duty to God is raising children in the gospel of Jesus Christ and helping them understand and believe the gospel in a genuinely personal way. For Sunday School teachers, their duty to God is teaching their lessons and gospel principles to their class with the Spirit.

But when you set family and church roles aside, we all have one common duty to God—a duty Spencer Zimmerman learned at a young age.

Thirteen-year-old Spencer chose to participate in a sprint distance triathlon to fulfill one of his service activities toward his Duty to God Award. But he didn’t do it alone. He completed the triathlon with his friend Dayton, who has cerebral palsy. And he chose this for one simple reason.

“That’s what we do to fulfill our duty to God, is the service for others,” he said, “because it makes you feel good and it makes that person feel even better.”

How can you fulfill your duty to God?

Fulfilling your duty to God isn’t just a Mormon program for young teenage priesthood holders to participate in, though. It’s a lifelong experience, and one that every person at practically every age can do by selflessly serving those around them.

In Doctrine and Covenants 42:38 God tells us that when we’re serving others, we’re ultimately serving Him: “For inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of these, ye do it unto me.”

You fulfill your duty to God by showing God you love Him, which is powerfully shown when you serve His children. You serve others by loving your neighbor and your enemies, by helping those near and far who are in need, as well as helping others come closer to God and Jesus Christ by being a good example and directly inviting them.

You should also pray for opportunities to serve, and when a service opportunity does present itself, even if it’s just holding the door open for someone at the grocery store, take it without hesitation.
