Jesus knew He was going to be arrested and killed soon.

So He left His apostles with comfort and love.

This week’s Come, Follow Me reading includes a very important message—the last one Jesus shared with His apostles before His death!

The Savior knew things were about to get very intense and even scary for His followers, especially those who would lead His church. So it’s no surprise that His words in these chapters are full of comfort. For example:

  • “I will not leave you comfortless,” He said (John 14:18).
  • He promised to send them the Holy Ghost, the Comforter (see John 14:16).
  • “In the world ye shall have tribulation,” He said, “but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

The Savior also emphasized the importance of love—love for God and love for one another. He uses some form of the word “love” at least 19 times in these four chapters! Notice how His message is so important that He repeats Himself to drive the point home.

  • “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him” (John 14:21).
  • “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23).
  • “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love” (John 15:9).
  • “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12).
  • “These things I command you, that ye love one another” (John 15:17).

His words apply to us today, too. If we try to keep His commandments—especially the commandment to love one another—we can have the Holy Ghost with us and feel the peace that only God can give.
