How Do I Build on a Sure Foundation?

02/20/23 | 1 min read

The parable of the wise man and the foolish man teaches us the importance of building on a firm foundation by not only hearing the Lord’s words but also doing them (see Matthew 7:24–27). Helaman 5:12 teaches us that our spiritual foundations should be built on “the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God.” Building on a strong foundation does not come easy. What did the wise man do to make his house unshakable? (see Luke 6:48).

Consider reviewing some of the Savior’s teachings from the Sermon on the Mount listed below. Is there a particular teaching that you feel inspired to practice more in your life? How might that teaching strengthen your relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ? You could make a plan to apply that teaching in your life and reflect on your progress over time.

Humility: Matthew 6:1–8, 16–18

Prayer: Matthew 6:5–13

Forgiveness: Matthew 6:14–15

Priorities: Matthew 6:19–24, 33; 7:6, 21–23

Trust in God: Matthew 6:25–34; 7:9–11

Judge righteously: Matthew 7:1–5, 15–20

Ask in faith: Matthew 7:7–8

Kindness: Matthew 7:12

Obedience: Matthew 7:21–27

“The Lord has declared that despite today’s unprecedented challenges, those who build their foundations upon Jesus Christ, and have learned how to draw upon His power, need not succumb to the unique anxieties of this era.”
