A quote from C. S. Lewis regarding the learning process and experience here on earth. He notes that while often we do not understand the trials we go through, God is using them to build us up.

Challenges are part of the process!

God is perfect, has all power, and knows everything! He loves you. His plan is to help you grow to become like Him.

Here’s the catch: that plan requires us to be challenged. Yes, that’s right—we need challenges!

“No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted,” taught Elder Orson F. Whitney. “It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, … and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire.”1

This video talks about how the changes God has in mind for us can be uncomfortable at times. What challenges have you read about in scripture stories this year? How did those challenges help people grow?

Challenging Lessons

When have you learned from a challenge? This would be a great question to ask a parent or leader. Add the story to your journal!

Notes
1. Elder Whitney was an apostle from 1906–1931. As quoted by Spencer W. Kimball in “Faith Precedes the Miracle” (1972), 98.
