Purpose
We all need to eat, and cooking—even if you don’t know much about it—is a necessary part of life. By learning basic cooking skills, you can take care of your own nutritional needs and prepare for your future home.
Goal Ideas
- Learn basic cooking terms and methods. For example, what’s the difference between simmering and boiling? Or whisking and folding ingredients? Find a recipe that looks good to you, and try it out! You might also learn how to prepare basic foods like rice, beans, or soup.
- Ask a good cook to teach you how to make his or her favorite recipe.
- Create a menu plan of several healthy meals you could prepare. Work with your parents to create a budget, and then shop for the ingredients you need. Make the meals you planned for your family members or friends.
- Gather favorite recipes from your family and put them in a cookbook. You could include facts about why the recipe is special and add family pictures to make it more personal. Share the book, or make copies to give to your family members.
- Pay attention to what you eat for a week. Do you think the foods you eat have an effect on your spirit?
