Following in His Footsteps

Walking the path Jesus walked will not always be easy, but it is worth every step we take.

Jesus Christ is the perfect example for each of us. We are told to become like Him, “to walk, even as he walked” (1 John 2:6).

Becoming perfect like Christ will not happen overnight. Becoming like Him is a slow and steady process that will take you an entire lifetime, and even beyond. It is a process you can start today, one step at a time.

Part of the Savior’s mission on this earth was to teach us how to live. He didn’t just invite us to do things; He showed us how to do them. Christ was baptized, prayed often to His Father in Heaven, loved His neighbors, served those in need, forgave those who wronged Him, stood up for His beliefs, and spread the gospel. These are all things we can also be doing daily. If you struggle with some of them, remember that all things are possible with God.

Jesus told His disciples, “Follow me” (Matthew 4:19). That invitation is extended to each of us. In order to follow Him and walk the path that He walked, we must take these four small but necessary steps:

Step 1: Select Christlike attributes you want to attain or you need to work on.

Christ had many spiritual strengths. He was humble, obedient, kind, courageous, selfless, submissive, full of love, and dedicated in his service to God. We should strive to have each of these attributes. One or more of these may already be a spiritual strength of yours, but since none of us are perfect, there’s always room for improvement. Make a list of each Christlike attribute, select one or two to work on at a time, and then cycle through the list to strengthen each attribute and become even more like Christ.

Step 2: Set specific and measureable goals to develop each attribute.

After choosing the attributes to focus on, set a specific and measurable goal to help you develop them. Set a timeframe in which you plan to meet this goal. Many goals we set are never met because we don’t give ourselves a date to accomplish them by. Be sure to keep track of your progress as you work on each attribute. A great way to do this is keeping a daily or weekly progress journal.

Step 3: Study Christ’s life by reading the scriptures.

We receive so many blessings when we study the scriptures. The Book of Mormon and Bible are filled with the life, teachings, and testimonies of Christ. This is one of the greatest ways to learn of Him and learn how to be a true follower of Him. As you read and ponder His life, keep a pen and paper on hand to write down any impressions or personal revelations you receive.

Step 4: Pray for God’s help on your daily journey.

Heavenly Father loves us and wants to help us. We can go to Him and ask for His help through sincere prayer. Find a quiet place and time, kneel down, and communicate with your Father in Heaven, asking for His guidance as you try to develop Christlike attributes and meet your goals. Praying for His help is only half of the equation. You must also be ready and willing to receive His answers and direction when He sends them.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks taught, “Following Christ is not a casual or occasional practice but a continuous commitment and way of life that applies at all times and in all places.”

A Continuous Commitment

Walking the path Jesus walked will not always be easy, but it is worth every step we take. The best way to follow our Savior is to obey the commandments He and Heavenly Father have given us. When we do, we will experience happiness, peace, and eternal life.
