Here’s an object lesson you could share with your family or class next time you teach!
You’ll need:
- Two clean, dry sponges
- A bowl of clear water
- A bowl of grape juice or other dark liquid
- Two empty bowls
What to do:
1. Read the First Presidency letter in the For the Strength of Youth guidebook. What are some ways the world’s standards are different from gospel standards?
2. Imagine the first sponge is like your soul. Put it in the juice for 10 seconds. Then squeeze it into an empty bowl. Look how much juice you picked up in a short amount of time! That’s like how negative influences can soak in and stain our thoughts and actions.
3. Now put the second sponge in the bowl of clear water. Let the sponge soak for 30 seconds. But don’t squeeze it out yet! This represents the different ways you can fill your mind with goodness each day.
4. Take the water-soaked sponge and put it in the bowl of juice. Let it sit for 10 seconds. Now squeeze it out in the last empty bowl. There is much less juice than there was in the first sponge, right?
The point: As we fill our minds with goodness, it leaves less room for negative influences!
