Reimaging Local Unit Computers

As many of you know, a great amount of work has been done over the past few years to simplify the procedure for preparing new computers for use in meetinghouses. We are aware that some of these efforts have caused some confusion, and we are continuing to do everything we can to simplify this process. To that end, in late 2017 the team responsible for images in the Church made the decision to combine all images in the Church into one simplified provisioning tool. This one tool allows all the different entities within the Church to order whatever model of computer best fits their needs. With this effort, we have also unified many of the different accounts that each entity uses for administration. For meetinghouses and workforce, all computers will now use ChurchSupport as the default administration account. All local units should use only the unit account which is created to log in once the provisioning tool has completed. Please follow the instructions provided on Setting Up a New Clerk Computer to complete the setup. If you have issues during this process, please contact Local Unit Support at the Global Service Center, and they will be able to help you complete this process.

Windows 10

Note: If you have received a computer from the manufacturer or Facility Manager and the manufacturing date of the PC is older than a year, you should follow the “Reinstall Windows 10” instructions in this article to have the most updated version of Windows 10 and the newest provisioning tool to avoid further complications.

If you have a computer that originally shipped with Windows 10 or was upgraded to Windows 10 and it needs to be reimaged, you may attempt to perform a restoral by following the “Reset Your PC” directions, or you may completely reimage the computer by following the “Reinstall Windows 10” directions, each respectively found below.

Reset Your PC

  • Before beginning, back up any important files. You may also want to preemptively download the updated Windows 10/11 provisioning tool by contacting the GSD.
  • Resetting lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them. Then it reinstalls Windows. To get started, go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose an option.
    • If you can’t open Settings, you can get to reset options by restarting your PC from the sign-in screen. Press Windows+L to get to the sign-in screen, then hold down the Shift key while you select Power > Restart in the lower right corner of the screen. After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    • If you can’t get to the sign-in screen, use a recovery drive or installation media to reset your PC. (See “Reinstall Windows 10” Instructions.)
  • We recommend selecting the Remove everything option, because all accounts and applications will be reinstalled by the provisioning tool.
  • Once Windows is restored, please copy the provisioning file to the desktop of the new computer and run it. Directions for the provisioning tool are found under Setting Up a New Clerk Computer.

Reinstall Windows 10

  • Before beginning, back up any important files and your MLS Security Token, if possible. You may also want to preemptively download the updated Windows 10/11provisioning tool.
  • On a working PC, go to the Microsoft software download website.
  • Download the media creation tool, and then run it.
  • Select Create installation media for another PC.
  • Choose a language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
  • Follow the steps to create installation media, and then select Finish.
  • Connect the installation media you created to your nonfunctional PC, and then turn it on.
  • On the initial setup screen, enter your language and other preferences, and then select Next. If you are not seeing the setup screen, your PC might not be set up to boot from a drive. Check your PC manufacturer’s website for info on how to change your PC’s boot order, and then try again.
  • Select Install now.
  • On the Enter the Product Key to Activate Windows page, enter a product key if you have one. If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free or bought and activated Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store, select Skip, and Windows will automatically activate later. For more details, see Activation in Windows 10.
  • On the License Terms page, select I accept the license terms (if you agree to them), then select Next.
  • On the Which Type of Installation Do You Want? page, select Custom.
  • On the Where Do You Want to Install Windows? page, select a partition, select a formatting option (if necessary), and then follow the instructions.
  • When you’ve finished formatting, select Next.
  • Follow the rest of the setup instructions to finish installing Windows 10.
  • Once Windows is restored, please copy the provisioning file to the desktop of the new computer and run it. Directions for the provisioning tool are found under Setting Up a New Clerk Computer.
