Light the World
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”—Matthew 5:16
What Is Light the World?
#LightTheWorld is an invitation to transform Christmas into a season of service. It’s a worldwide movement to touch hearts and change lives by doing the things Jesus did: feeding the hungry, comforting the lonely, visiting the sick and afflicted, and showing kindness to everyone. Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). #LightTheWorld is the perfect way to let our light—and His light—shine brightly.
25 Days, 25 Ways to Serve
The #LightTheWorld campaign challenges us to #LightTheWorld in 25 ways in the 25 days leading up to Christmas. The Church provides specific service prompts each day to help us focus our lives on others during the Christmas season. You can download a calendar outlining ideas for each day or sign up to receive text messages of service ideas directly to your phone.
Usually we visit a vending machine to get something for ourselves, but #LightTheWorld “Giving” Machines are a way to give to someone else. Giving Machines make it easy to purchase and donate items such as clothing, eyeglasses, medicine, hygiene supplies, wheelchairs, sporting equipment, and even livestock which are automatically donated to global charities.
In 2019, Giving Machines collected more than $3.9 million in donations. Items purchased included nearly 63,000 chickens, 1.6 million meals, 955,000 vaccines, more than 3,500 pairs of shoes, and more than 7,200 pairs of glasses. One hundred percent of the contribution goes to the charities represented at the Giving Machines, and the Church covers any credit card fees.
Last year, Giving Machines could be found in ten places—eight U.S. locations and two international locations.
Special Sunday Services
On the Sunday nearest Christmas, we hold a special Sabbath Day meeting focused on Jesus Christ's birth and life. Friends and acquaintances not of our faith are welcome every Sunday but especially invited to come and worship with us that day.
#LightTheWorld Every Day
Each year at Christmas, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints makes a monumental effort to spread the message and mission of #LightTheWorld. However, you can do it all year by thinking about who you can serve each and every day.
